Barrel Sauna or Square Sauna: Which Suits Your Garden?

This is the first fork in the road when buying, and the only one you cannot change later. Both shapes work, but in different situations.

Heat-up: the barrel wins

The round cross-section means less air for the same number of seats and no dead corners. That saves time and fuel on every use.

Garden space: the square one wins

A square sauna can be placed flush against a wall or a fence. A barrel always leaves some space at the sides, which on a tight plot can be decisive.

Glazing: advantage square

A straight wall allows large glass areas up to a full front. In a barrel the window has to follow the curve, usually half-round in the back wall or in the door.

Price per seat

The barrel is cheaper because the wall is structure, insulation and cladding in one. A timber-frame cabin needs several layers for that, which means more material, more labour and more room for error.

Durability outdoors

Water and snow run off a round roof by themselves. Flat or gently pitched roofs need good covering and regular checks, especially after wet winters.

A framed cabin carries a risk that a barrel does not have: a badly done vapour barrier traps moisture in the wall, invisible until it is too late.

In short

Barrel: fast heat-up, lower cost, no foundations, simple self-assembly kit, which suits most private garden saunas.

Square: large window front, fitting into existing buildings, possible extension later.
