Sauna Stove: Wood-Burning or Electric?
Wood-burning or electric stove for your garden sauna? Heat character, running costs, power supply, safety and which to choose for home, holiday home or let.
Read →The controller is the real reason an electric stove can be more convenient than wood. Without it the gap between the two shrinks a great deal, and you give up the scent and character of a real fire into the bargain.
You set the time at which the sauna should be ready and come home from work straight into a warm sauna instead of waiting 40 minutes.
It sounds like a small thing, but in practice it decides whether the sauna is used twice a week or twice a month. The biggest enemy of the garden sauna is neither the price nor the weather, but forty minutes of waiting on a weeknight.
You switch the sauna on during the journey home. Convenient, but it needs Wi-Fi where the sauna stands, and that is often a problem, because the sauna is usually at the far end of the garden from the router.
Check reception at the planned spot before you pay for a Wi-Fi module. Sometimes a repeater is the cheaper solution than a more expensive controller.
Automatic switch-off after a set time is the most important. It means the sauna is not left on overnight because someone forgot.
Overheat protection that cuts the power if the thermostat fails.
A child lock.
On a rental sauna, or when other people use it, these are not extras but essentials, because a guest does not know your stove.
A panel inside is more convenient during the session: you can change the temperature without going out.
A panel outside or in the changing area lasts longer, because electronics live shorter lives at 90 °C and high humidity.
Best of all: the power unit outside and only a small control panel inside. Then the expensive part is protected.
A simple controller with a timer comes with many stoves as standard. A version with Wi-Fi and an app costs extra.
With regular use after work, it pays back in the number of sauna sessions, not in money.
A sauna on weeknights after work: clearly yes, and with a timer.
A weekend sauna, when you have time anyway and enjoy lighting the stove: an expense you can skip. Then a wood stove deserves a closer look.
A rental sauna: a controller with automatic switch-off is a must, whatever the budget.
