It is tempting to buy a big sauna “just in case”. But it comes with two hidden costs you pay every single session: a longer heat-up and a higher running cost per sauna, even when only two of you are sitting in it.
Who really needs one
Large families, homes with frequent guests, holiday lets and glamping sites: anywhere that six people in the sauna at once is a normal evening.
If in practice it is the two of you, and six people only get together three times a year, a big sauna is the wrong choice financially.
Heat-up time
Expect 40–45 minutes to reach 90 °C, and up to an hour in frosty weather. That takes planning: a quick sauna straight after work is not on the cards.
Technical requirements
You will need a stove of around 12 kW or more. With an electric stove that is a serious load on the house wiring: three-phase supply, a dedicated circuit and properly rated protection, all signed off by a qualified electrician.
Bigger and heavier components also mean you should check access to the garden and the route from the delivery point very carefully before you order.
The sensible compromise
A 3 m barrel sauna with a changing room. The hot room stays manageable, while the changing room gives you a dry place to change and cuts heat loss in winter.
When big is still the right call
When the sauna is meant to earn its keep: for a holiday let, capacity is a selling point.
