The Most Common Mistakes When Buying a Garden Sauna
Ten mistakes that cost the most, from comparing prices on different tax bases to buying too big. All of them can be spotted before you order.
Read →Going in the sauna after sport is popular and sensible, but not straight away, not every time, and not for the reasons it is usually recommended.
Give it 15–20 minutes after training, until your pulse is back in its resting range. Going from exertion straight into 90 °C is a double load on your circulation: the heart is still beating fast and the sauna adds more on top.
Use the time to change and drink. It is not lost time; it is part of the routine.
After a workout you are already short of fluid. The sauna makes that worse if you have not drunk beforehand, and dehydration cancels most of the benefits.
Water before the session, in every rest and afterwards. After hard training and a long sauna it is worth having a drink with electrolytes, because you lose more than just water.
Looser muscles. This is the most noticeable effect and the main reason athletes like the sauna.
Better sleep the following night. That is real recovery, not just a feeling, because most of the repair work happens while you sleep.
A subjective feeling of being ready to train again sooner.
It does not “burn fat”. The weight you lose in the sauna is water, and it comes back with your first meal and your first glass.
It does not measurably clear muscle soreness any faster. Relaxed muscles are not the same thing as speeded-up biochemistry.
It does not replace warming up or stretching.
After a very hard strength session if another one is coming the next day. The extra load on your circulation can hurt recovery rather than help it.
With any injury that involves inflammation. Heat makes it worse; in the acute phase cold helps, not heat.
When you have an infection, even a mild one.
When you are clearly under-hydrated and have no time to make up for it.
Training ends at 6 pm. Change and drink until 6:20. Sauna from 6:30 to 7:45, two or three rounds with full rests. Dinner, a quiet evening, bed at 10.
With an electric stove that has a timer, you set it in the morning for 6:15 and walk straight in after training. That one detail decides whether you do this regularly or once a month.
One short round of five to eight minutes can work like a warm-up: it loosens the muscles and improves mobility.
A full sauna session before training is not a good idea, though. You come out relaxed and short of fluid, which is the opposite of the state a workout needs.
Often a better moment than straight after a hard session. Your body does not have to cope with two loads at once.
With three training days a week, the sauna on your days off gives you recovery without the loads overlapping.
