Brighton has a lively sea-swimming scene all year round, and the seafront is busy even in winter. A garden sauna is the natural way to warm up afterwards without queuing for a hot shower.

Brighton and Hove are packed with small terraced houses, many on hills, so gardens are tight and often tiered. A compact 2 m barrel on a neat slab platform is often the best fit. Out in Lewes, Seaford and the villages under the South Downs, plots are bigger and more sheltered.

Light, sea air and tidy gardens

In Brighton the light off the sea is bright and the gardens are small, so a neat cabin matters. The spruce can be left natural, or treated in a darker tone to blend with a fence or planting. Plant climbers on the fence rather than against the barrel, so the timber can breathe.

If your garden is a courtyard, the barrel is a clean, simple shape that does not crowd the space.
